WeChat tests Xiaowei AI integration for social and productivity tasks
Tencent is conducting gray-scale testing for ‘Xiaowei AI’, an intelligent assistant integrated directly into the WeChat ecosystem. Rather than existing as a standalone application, the AI is being embedded into core social and functional workflows, including messaging, content consumption, and image processing.
Key features currently under testing include ‘AI processing’ for images—allowing users to beautify, modify, or extract information from photos—and ‘AI summary’ tools for Official Accounts to condense long articles. Within the Moments social feed, the AI can suggest comments or assist in writing captions based on uploaded images. The assistant also supports voice commands to refine chat tones, translate text, or draft replies.
Technically, the Xiaowei AI is powered by the WeLM model, utilizing a Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) architecture with parameter scales of 80 billion and 617 billion. Some responses may also utilize DeepSeek. The integration aims to transform WeChat from a communication tool into an AI-driven operating system capable of managing complex digital tasks through its massive social network.
