Wedding gift etiquette sparks debate in Poland

A recent debate regarding wedding gift etiquette has resurfaced in Poland after a couple reported being mocked by newlyweds for giving 400 PLN in a wedding envelope. The guests stated they gave the amount because it was what they could afford, leading to a discussion on whether wedding gifts should be viewed as a gesture or a way to cover the cost of the reception.

Wedding expert Dariusz Zwadowski noted that a gift should be a gesture rather than a “bill for the broth, second course, and cake.” Data indicates that while gift amounts vary, the relationship with the couple is the primary factor for 41% of respondents, while 32% cite their own financial situation as the deciding factor.

According to the “Wedding Gifts of Poles. Trends 2026” report by UCE Research and Briju, cash remains the dominant gift. Over 74% of respondents choose cash, either alone or combined with a small symbolic gift. Other options like gift cards (6.1%), home equipment (4.2%), and vouchers (3.4%) are significantly less common. Statistics show that the most frequent cash gift range is between 701 and 1000 PLN, followed by 401–500 PLN and 501–700 PLN.
