Wedgewood Polls admits to fabricating US election data

Wedgewood Polls, a self-described US polling firm, has admitted that most of its published survey data was fabricated. The firm stated on X that the deception was an “experimental project” intended to demonstrate the vulnerabilities and low barrier to entry within the modern political polling industry.

The fabrication was uncovered by the polling aggregator FiftyPlusOne, which identified discrepancies in the firm's data. Following the admission, The New York Times removed 15 Wedgewood Polls surveys from its database that had been published between June and October.

The impact of the fake data has been significant for political campaigns. Michigan Senate candidate Mallory McMorrow reported that a June poll showing her with single-digit support caused donations to dry up and led to media pressure to drop out. Additionally, fabricated data incorrectly placed candidate Francesca Hong ahead in the Wisconsin gubernatorial primary.

This incident follows a similar scandal in August involving Median Strategies, which also admitted to fabricating polls as an experiment. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr noted a surge in fake and suppression polls designed to interfere with the electoral process.
