Weert launches free electric tourist train for locals and visitors

Since 4 August, the Dutch town of Weert has operated a free electric tourist train that shuttles between the town centre and Vakantiepark Weerterbergen. The train, built from a locomotive and a single wagon, can carry up to 23 passengers and is fully accessible for people with reduced mobility and families with strollers.

Two routes are offered. The short circuit takes about 20–25 minutes, running from the holiday park via Dennenoord to the centre and looping past local landmarks such as the Raphaëlpad and the Bassin. The longer circuit traverses the forested recreation area De IJzeren Man, passing a deer enclosure, a children’s farm, the Blauwe Meertje and the nature campsite Wega, and lasts roughly 45–50 minutes. Services run Tuesday to Thursday and on weekends between 10:00 and 18:00, with six trips per day. From 17 August a live tracker allows passengers to follow the train online. A second tourist train is planned to start service in October, pending final route confirmation and branding.
