Wegovy linked to hair loss and recommended for tablet form
GLP-1 weight-loss medications, including Wegovy and Mounjaro, have been linked to hair loss in some users. Clinical trials by Novo Nordisk indicated that up to 10 percent of Wegovy patients experienced hair loss, while a study on Mounjaro reported rates up to 5.7 percent compared to 0.9 percent in placebo groups.
Researchers suggest the hair loss may be an indirect result of rapid weight loss rather than the drugs themselves. This rapid weight loss can cause physiological stress leading to telogen effluvium, a condition where hair follicles prematurely enter a resting phase and shed hair. The potential for hair loss may increase with higher dosages and greater weight loss.
Separately, the European Medicines Agency’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) has recommended the approval of Wegovy in tablet form for adults. A clinical trial involving 307 overweight adults showed that the safety profile of the tablet version is comparable to the existing injectable form. The final decision now rests with the European Commission.
