Wegovy usage and compensation issues emerge in Denmark

Recent developments regarding the weight-loss drug Wegovy in Denmark highlight both legal challenges and high dropout rates among users. One patient, Anders Hansen, received 5 million DKK in compensation after losing significant vision due to the medication. However, legal experts and the patient note that a 1995 regulation caps compensation for drug-related injuries at 5 million DKK, whereas similar injuries from surgical procedures could yield up to 10 million DKK. This cap was originally implemented to limit state financial risk.

Separately, a study from Aarhus University involving over 157,000 Danes reveals that 49 percent of Wegovy users stop treatment within the first year. Researchers suggest that high costs and unrealistic expectations regarding the permanence of weight loss are primary drivers for discontinuation. Experts warn that stopping the medication often leads to a rapid return of appetite and subsequent weight gain, making long-term weight management difficult.
