Novo Nordisk launches Wegovy weight-loss pill in Germany
Novo Nordisk has launched the oral version of its weight-loss medication, Wegovy, in German pharmacies as of September 1. The pill contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient used in the company’s widely known weekly injections. Following European Medicines Agency approval in July, Germany serves as the first country in the European Union to commercialize this oral formulation.
The medication is indicated for adults with obesity (BMI of 30 or higher) or overweight (BMI of 27 or higher) accompanied by at least one weight-related condition, such as diabetes or high blood pressure. Unlike the weekly injection, the tablet must be taken daily on an empty stomach. Clinical studies indicate that the oral treatment can lead to weight loss of between 11% and 17%.
Medical professionals and pharmacists emphasize that the medication requires a prescription and proper guidance regarding side effects, such as gastrointestinal issues. Retail prices for the pill are expected to be comparable to the injectable version, which typically ranges between €170 and €280 depending on dosage.
