Wei Yongkang: The decline of a Chinese child prodigy
Wei Yongkang, once celebrated in Chinese media as the ‘Eastern Prodigy,’ faced a significant personal crisis after his rapid academic ascent. Born in 1983 in Hunan Province, Wei demonstrated extraordinary abilities early in life, recognizing over 1,000 Chinese characters by age two and completing middle school by age four.
His academic trajectory included entering Xiangtan University to study physics at age 13 and being admitted to a master's-PhD research program at the Institute of High Energy Physics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences at age 17. However, his intense focus on academics, heavily managed by his mother, Teng Xuemei, left him without essential life skills.
Upon entering a research environment that required independence and self-care, Wei struggled to adapt. The lack of autonomy and practical life experience eventually led to a crisis that resulted in him being withdrawn from his studies at age 20.
