Weidmüller introduces u-extend modular hardware for edge controllers
Weidmüller has introduced the u-extend family of modules designed for its u-control M series edge controllers. These modules allow for the expansion of interfaces and memory, providing a modular hardware infrastructure that can be adapted to varying industrial requirements.
The u-extend system utilizes two form factors: function modules and expansion modules. Function modules are mounted on a DIN rail to the left of the controller, allowing for up to three modules to be added. These modules feature interfaces for additional expansion modules and include an internal M.2 slot for memory upgrades. Initial offerings include the Basis M.2 function module, a CAN expansion module, and an RS232/RS485 expansion module.
By utilizing open standard interfaces such as USB, PCIe, and SGMII, the system aims to allow customers and partners to develop their own modules with minimal effort. This hardware modularity complements the u-OS industrial Linux operating system, creating a scalable automation platform designed to meet future normative requirements and the Cyber Resilience Act.
