Weißer Ring warns of hidden crimes against elderly in Germany

The victim protection organization Weißer Ring has warned of a significant number of unreported crimes targeting elderly individuals in Germany who rely on assistance. These crimes often involve violence within care settings, the fraudulent acquisition of powers of attorney, and the embezzlement of assets.

Patrick Liesching, Honorary Chairman of Weißer Ring, noted that many victims suffer from dementia, making it difficult for them to report abuse. Furthermore, perpetrators often act as caregivers or legal proxies, which prevents authorities from gaining necessary oversight. The organization suggests that a massive field of criminality remains hidden from public view.

Barbara Richstein, Federal Chairwoman of Weißer Ring, highlighted the necessity of believing victims, citing a case in Brandenburg where a 91-year-old woman's report of assault was initially met with skepticism. The Center for Quality in Care (ZQP) also identified financial exploitation as a major form of violence against the elderly, noting its severe social and economic consequences despite a lack of comprehensive data.
