Weight loss and bone density: How to protect bone health

Weight loss, whether achieved through diet, exercise, surgery, or medication, can lead to a reduction in bone mass. While some bone loss is considered normal during weight reduction, significant loss can increase the risk of fractures.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) medications, such as Wegovy and Zepbound, have been linked to bone loss. However, research indicates that the weight loss process itself is the primary driver of this change rather than the medications alone. Individuals at higher risk for bone density issues include older adults, postmenopausal women, and those with existing conditions like osteopenia or osteoporosis.

To mitigate these risks, health experts suggest incorporating strength training and regular exercise into weight loss plans. Maintaining adequate intake of protein, calcium, and vitamin D is also essential for protecting bone health.
