Weight loss can lower blood pressure, study finds
Research shows that modest weight loss can significantly reduce systolic blood pressure. On average, losing about five kilograms lowers systolic pressure by four to five millimetres of mercury, while each kilogram of weight loss is associated with a reduction of roughly one millimetre. Improvements often appear within a few weeks of starting a weight‑loss program.
The decrease results from several physiological changes: a lighter heart workload, increased insulin sensitivity, more efficient kidney sodium handling, and reduced activity of the sympathetic nervous system. Lifestyle measures that accompany weight loss—such as reduced sodium intake, following the DASH diet, regular aerobic activity, limited alcohol consumption, sufficient sleep, and stress management—also contribute to lower blood pressure. Clinical guidelines advise medication if blood pressure remains above 140/90 mm Hg despite lifestyle modifications, and clinicians often combine drug therapy with continued lifestyle support.
The American Heart Association emphasizes that even a modest loss of 4.5 kg can make a meaningful difference in preventing hypertension‑related heart disease and stroke.
