GLP-1 drug manufacturers face lawsuits over vision loss risks

Manufacturers of GLP-1 receptor agonist medications, including Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly, are facing numerous lawsuits from patients alleging that drugs such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro are linked to sudden vision loss. The condition cited is non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), a rare disorder that can cause permanent blindness. Both companies have denied any causal link, noting that many users have pre-existing risk factors like diabetes and obesity.

In Brazil, the regulatory agency Anvisa is investigating 13 notifications of suspected NAION among users of Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus, and Mounjaro. While these reports are being examined, medical experts suggest the medications remain beneficial for most, provided they are used for intended medical purposes rather than cosmetic reasons.

Additionally, new research utilizing FDA data suggests potential reproductive health impacts. The studies indicate that semaglutide and tirzepatide may be associated with menstrual irregularities, including heavy bleeding, clots, and changes in ovulation patterns in women of reproductive age.

Separately, Anvisa has suspended public advertising for the semaglutide-based drug Semavy, ruling that its marketing was improperly directed at the general public rather than healthcare professionals, as required for prescription-only medications.
