Weight-loss medication developments and dental health concerns
A new daily oral pill containing the same appetite-suppressing ingredient found in weekly injections like Ozempic and Wegovy has been approved by Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). The medication is expected to be available in pharmacies by the end of the year. Experts suggest the pill could increase weight-loss drug use in Australia by up to 40 percent, offering an alternative for patients who prefer oral medication over injections. While efficacy is reported to be similar, doctors note that side effects remain comparable to the injectable versions.
Parallel to these developments, medical professionals are addressing concerns regarding oral health, often colloquially referred to as ‘Ozempic teeth’. While the medications do not directly dissolve enamel, side effects such as dry mouth (xerostomia) can increase the risk of cavities, plaque build-up, and enamel erosion. This condition is often linked to reduced food and fluid intake, dehydration, or gastrointestinal symptoms associated with the drugs.
