Weight loss medication trend shifts Brazilian consumer habits and agribusiness demand
The rising popularity of weight loss injectable medications in Brazil is driving significant shifts in consumer behavior and agricultural demand. According to a survey by Pluxee involving 1,200 users, 84% of those using these medications reduced their consumption of industrialized goods, while 83% decreased intake of ultra-processed foods. Furthermore, 57% of users have prioritized protein sources in their diets.
This trend presents new opportunities for the agribusiness sector, particularly in Paraná, as demand grows for high-quality proteins such as meat, eggs, milk, and legumes. Medical experts note that these medications affect brain regions responsible for hunger and reward, reducing cravings for sugar, fat, and salt. However, doctors also warn that weight loss can include muscle mass reduction, making adequate protein intake essential.
On a social and political level, the accessibility of these medications has become a point of discussion. While the trend has moved from high-end clinics to broader social classes, cost remains a significant barrier. The Brazilian government has indicated interest in studying the incorporation of these treatments into the Unified Health System (SUS) for patients with medical indications for obesity.
