Weight loss plateaus explained by metabolic adaptations

The phenomenon of a weight loss plateau, where weight loss slows or stops despite maintaining a diet, is a common physiological occurrence. According to a review published in Health Science Reports, this plateau results from a combination of metabolic adaptations, reduced energy expenditure, and increased hunger.

Initial rapid weight loss is often attributed to the depletion of glycogen stores. Because glycogen is stored with water, reducing caloric and carbohydrate intake leads to significant fluid loss in the early stages of a diet. This rapid drop does not necessarily mean the diet is more effective initially, but rather reflects changes in water weight and glycogen levels rather than purely fat loss.
