Weight loss treatments drive demand for plastic surgery

The rise of bariatric surgery and GLP-1 pharmacological treatments for obesity is driving an increase in demand for plastic surgery to address excess skin. As patients achieve significant weight loss, they often face physical challenges such as skin folds, chafing, and tissues that do not adapt to their new body volume.

Data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons indicates that 20% of patients treated with GLP-1 medications have already undergone weight-loss-related plastic surgery, with another 39% considering it. Common procedures include abdominoplasty, arm lifts, and thigh surgery. Due to the clinical relevance of this trend, the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery issued specific evaluation recommendations for surgery following massive weight loss in July 2026.

Beyond aesthetic concerns, managing post-bariatric surgery life involves navigating metabolic adaptations, potential weight regain, and psychological impacts. Patients must monitor for clinical signs such as regular weight increases or changes in dietary habits to avoid complications.
