Weight management strategies and risks highlighted in new studies

Recent research and health authorities are addressing the complexities of weight management and the risks associated with rapid weight loss. A clinical study published in ‘Obesity Science & Practice’ examined the physiological challenges of stopping GLP-1 receptor agonist medications, commonly known as ‘weight-loss injections.’ The study found that individuals who stopped medication after losing more than 10% of their body weight faced significant weight regain. However, those utilizing ‘medically tailored meals’ or digital health management apps limited their weight rebound to approximately 3.6%, compared to an 11% increase in the control group.

In a separate development, China’s National Health Commission issued warnings against extreme weight-loss practices promoted by some training camps, such as excessive dieting and overtraining. Officials emphasized that the goal of weight management should be health balance rather than achieving the lowest possible weight. They warned that extreme methods can lead to dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, muscle loss, and increased cardiovascular risks. The Commission advised the public to utilize professional medical services, noting that over 95% of tertiary public hospitals in China now offer specialized weight management clinics.
