Weight‑loss experts outline sustainable diet and surgery options

Nutrition specialists recommend several practical ways to lose weight without constant hunger. Cleveland Cavaliers performance dietitian Kylene Bogden advises adding healthy plant‑based fats such as peanut butter, guacamole or olive oil to meals to boost satiety. Registered dietitian Scott Keatley stresses the importance of fiber‑rich carbohydrates and larger low‑calorie food volumes, noting USDA guidelines of 25‑34 g of fiber per day. Adequate protein intake is also highlighted for muscle repair and fullness.

In parallel, medical professionals compare non‑surgical and surgical weight‑loss approaches. Non‑surgical programs, including physician‑supervised plans and GLP‑1 receptor agonist medications, can achieve 5‑21 % weight loss but often require ongoing treatment to maintain results. Bariatric surgery remains the only proven long‑term solution for morbid obesity, with about 70 % of patients maintaining weight loss for ten years or more. Eligibility guidelines from the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity (IFSO) include a BMI of 30 + with obesity‑related disease or a BMI of 35 +  regardless of comorbidities. Risks such as anesthesia complications are weighed against the benefits before surgery is recommended.
