Weil, Gotshal & Manges denies merger reports amid partner exits

Weil, Gotshal & Manges has denied reports that it is currently engaged in merger discussions, despite speculation following a series of high-profile partner departures. A spokesperson for the firm stated, “Weil is not engaged in merger discussions with any firm,” though added that the firm continually evaluates ways to strengthen its platform.

The speculation follows the exit of Michael Aiello, chair of the firm’s corporate department, along with five M&A partners to Cravath, Swaine & Moore. Additionally, two London-based M&A partners recently moved to Sullivan & Cromwell.

While the firm maintains it is not in active talks, reports suggest that leadership has become more receptive to the idea of a combination as one of several strategic options. Other options being considered include strategic hires, internal promotions, and remaining independent.
