Weil, Gotshal & Manges faces leadership crisis and partner exodus
Elite law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges is experiencing significant instability characterized by a series of high-profile partner departures and leadership uncertainty. The firm, renowned for its bankruptcy and restructuring practice, has seen approximately 30 partners defect to rivals since the start of the year.
Key departures include Michael Aiello, head of the M&A practice, who is moving to Cravath, Swaine & Moore along with several lawyers. Adding to the instability, Ramona Nee, a private equity expert slated to become the firm’s sole chair in January, has reportedly declined the position and held discussions about joining rival Simpson Thacher & Bartlett.
Internal tensions have been linked to the firm’s leadership under executive partner Barry Wolf. Some partners have expressed dissatisfaction with the firm's long-term vision regarding artificial intelligence and competitive compensation packages. These departures follow the reported breakdown of merger talks between Weil and Willkie Farr & Gallagher.
