Weimar festival showcases sustainable building materials from bacteria and waste

At the New Bauhaus Festival in Weimar, researchers and designers presented innovative building materials aimed at reducing the high energy and raw material demands of the construction industry. These methods focus on a circular economy by utilizing waste products and agricultural residues.

Product designers Friedrich Gerlach and Julia Huhnholz demonstrated a process that uses bacteria to repurpose old bricks. The method involves collecting and crushing old bricks into granules, which are then mixed with cultivated bacteria. These bacteria create solid structures between the granules, resulting in a material similar to a brick. A significant advantage of this biological process is that it operates at room temperature, eliminating the need for the high-temperature kilns required for traditional brick production.

The bacteria used in this process require urea, which can be sourced from synthetic production or human urine. Other materials discussed for future sustainable construction include straw and various biological processes intended to transform waste into functional building components.
