Weimar to renovate Ernst Thälmann monument

The city of Weimar has announced the scheduled renovation of the Ernst Thälmann monument located at Buchenwaldplatz. The project involves the routine cleaning and conservation of the bronze statue and its travertine base.

While the monument to the former KPD chairman has been a subject of political debate due to its origins in the GDR, Mayor Peter Kleine stated that the restoration is a non-political measure. The ensemble is protected as a cultural monument. The work is scheduled to begin on September 4 and will be carried out by the firm Steindomaene Frank Ehmig.
