Weisshorn glacier collapse threat puts Randa village on alert

The Weisshorn hanging glacier in Valais, Switzerland, is showing significant movement and acceleration, raising fears of a major collapse in the coming days. Authorities have established a restricted “danger zone” to prevent access to the area.

The village of Randa has raised its surveillance level to 3 out of 4 on the Federal Office for the Environment (Ofev) scale, which signifies early detection and alert. This follows a history of instability in the region; in 1991, Randa narrowly avoided destruction when approximately 30 million cubic meters of rock collapsed into the valley.

Experts attribute these geological instabilities to the climate crisis. Heatwaves are cited as a contributing factor to the potential collapse of the Weisshorn glacier. This event occurs amid broader concerns for Alpine glaciers, with reports suggesting that dozens of glaciers could disappear by autumn.
