Weisshorn glacier instability increases avalanche risk near Randa

An unstable hanging glacier at the Weisshorn above Randa, Valais, continues to move downslope at speeds of up to 20 centimeters per day. Approximately 250,000 to 300,000 cubic meters of ice are currently in motion.

Recent snowfall has introduced a new layer of risk. Experts warn that an icefall could trigger massive snow masses, creating powerful ice-snow avalanches with a much greater reach than typical summer icefalls. The amount of snow accumulating on the underlying Bis glacier is a critical factor in current risk assessments.

Authorities have maintained a high level of monitoring, including radar, camera surveillance, and movement sensors. While the residential area of Randa is not considered to be under immediate threat, the danger zone remains closed to hikers and mountain bikers. Additionally, the local gravel plant has been temporarily closed as a precaution.
