Weizmann Institute study suggests Viagra may block cancer metastasis

Researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel reported that sildenafil, the active ingredient of Viagra, can impede the spread of cancer cells. The laboratory work showed that the drug raises cGMP levels, which in turn traps cholesterol inside cellular compartments, depriving tumor cells of a key resource needed for migration and formation of new lesions.

Analysis of medical records covering about five million Israeli patients indicated better survival among those who had used sildenafil, especially when combined with statins that lower cholesterol synthesis. The scientists emphasized that the findings are based on animal models, cell cultures and observational data, and that clinical trials are needed before any therapeutic use can be recommended.
