Welink Energy enters insolvency for Portugal’s largest solar plant
Welink Energy Portugal 2 UK, the owner of Solara4, has entered insolvency proceedings. Located in Alcoutim, Algarve, Solara4 is Portugal’s largest solar power plant, with an installed capacity of approximately 219-220 MW.
A report by BDO indicates the facility faced a combination of operational and market challenges, including electricity production levels falling consistently below initial forecasts. The surge in solar capacity across the Iberian Peninsula has also exerted downward pressure on wholesale electricity prices, which at times reached zero or negative levels.
Other contributing factors include technical issues, fires, and industrial disputes with China Triumph International Engineering, a subsidiary of a Chinese state-owned industrial holding. Major creditors, including Investec and Kommunalkredit Austria, face an exposure of approximately 64 million euros.
Despite the insolvency, administrators aim to preserve the plant's industrial value and prepare for a sale to new investors rather than shutting down operations. Welink had previously prepared a 400 million euro investment plan to transform the site into a hybrid energy project involving wind power and battery storage systems.
