Wellcome Global Monitor report shows decline in global trust in science

The Wellcome Global Monitor 2026 survey reveals that global trust in science has fallen to 72% in 2025, a decrease from the 80% peak recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The report, which surveyed over 140,000 people across 140 countries, also notes that outright skepticism has risen to 19%, up from 13% in 2018 and 2020.

Findings indicate that trust is closely linked to socioeconomic stability and healthcare confidence. Individuals with higher financial security and confidence in local healthcare systems are twice as likely to trust science heavily. While 81% of respondents recognize the personal benefits of scientific research, only 37% believe these advancements are equitably distributed across society.

Regional data shows significant variance in trust levels. Spain reported the highest trust at 67.9%, followed by Finland at 65.9%, and Central Asian nations Uzbekistan (63.8%) and Tajikistan (60.7%). Conversely, some of the lowest levels of trust were recorded in Togo (5.8%), North Macedonia (8.2%), and Somalia (9.1%).
