Welles Crowther: The hero known as the man in the red bandana

Welles Crowther, a 24-year-old stockbroker and former Boston College lacrosse player, is recognized for his heroic actions during the September 11 attacks at the World Trade Center. While many fled the towers, Crowther chose to re-enter the South Tower to assist others.

Identified by survivors as the ‘man in the red bandana,’ Crowther used a red bandana—a gift from his father—to cover his nose and mouth against smoke. He guided groups of people to safety and even carried an injured woman on his back. Crowther, who had previously expressed a desire to become a New York City firefighter, ultimately lost his life during the disaster.
