Wellington City Council restructure deemed ill‑timed amid job cuts

Wellington City Council has announced a restructuring plan that would disestablish 144 positions, including five fixed‑term roles, and create 80 new posts, resulting in a net loss of 64 jobs across four business groups: Property, Planning and Environment, Creative Capital, and Economic and Engagement.

The Public Service Association (PSA) – Te Pūkenga Here Tikanga Mahi – warned the proposal will create “a huge upheaval, putting great stress on loyal council workers” and could further weaken a local economy already strained by government cuts. PSA assistant secretary Tom Buckley said the timing is poor, especially as council amalgamation is being discussed, and urged the council to reconsider. The union pledged support for affected employees and called for a balanced approach that protects services for Wellington residents.
