Wellington Fagundes defends Antarctic research funding
Senator Wellington Fagundes (PL), a candidate for the governorship of Mato Grosso, has defended the allocation of approximately R$ 600,000 to the Brazilian Antarctic Program. The funds are intended for the hiring of mountaineers to provide logistical support for Brazilian researchers during expeditions and camping in Antarctica.
Fagundes argued that Antarctic research is vital for Brazil, noting its potential impact on climate patterns and agricultural production in the Midwest region. He stated his intention to continue supporting scientific research through parliamentary amendments to ensure a Brazilian presence in the region.
Records indicate that the senator's amendments have also directed funds to various locations outside of Mato Grosso. These include R$ 6 million for hyperbaric medicine research in São Paulo, R$ 500,000 for hospital services in São Paulo, and nearly R$ 800,000 in total for Antarctic research support across different years. Additionally, funds were directed to a naval hospital in Mato Grosso do Sul for equipment purchases.
