Wellington jail visitor charged in alleged drug smuggling attempt

A 34-year-old woman has been charged following an alleged attempt to smuggle prohibited drugs into a correctional centre in Wellington, New South Wales.

On Sunday, August 23, a drug detection dog alerted officers to the presence of cannabis and buprenorphine strips on the woman as she arrived to visit an inmate. During the subsequent search, police allege the woman attempted to dispose of the contraband by throwing it into a nearby paddock.

The woman was arrested and charged with six offences, including possession and supply of prohibited drugs, bringing prohibited items into a place of detention, and breach of bail. She was refused bail and is scheduled to appear before the Sutherland Local Court on August 27.
