Wellington Police rescue seal pup crossing Hutt Road

Wellington Police and the Department of Conservation (DOC) collaborated to rescue a young seal pup that was spotted crossing Hutt Road on Sunday, September 27.

After receiving reports of the animal moving through the area, officers located the seal near the Wellington Railway Station. The pup appeared to be attempting to return to the harbour, a path that would have required it to cross the road again. Following guidance from DOC, police officers lifted and transported the animal to a beach, where it was safely released back into the water.

Authorities advised the public not to attempt to move seals themselves if they encounter them in dangerous situations. Instead, citizens should contact the police if a seal creates an immediate road safety issue.
