Wellness tourism shifts from hotel amenity to core luxury product

The luxury hospitality sector is undergoing a significant shift as wellness evolves from a secondary amenity into a core product. The wellness tourism market, valued at approximately $894 billion in 2024, is projected to reach the trillion-dollar mark by the end of the decade.

Leading hotel brands are increasingly utilizing elite athletes as global ambassadors to drive this trend. SHA Wellness has partnered with Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso to focus on medical longevity and performance optimization, while Mandarin Oriental has appointed Olympic gymnast Simone Biles as its first Global Wellness Ambassador to advise on movement, recovery, and mental wellbeing.

Industry experts note that modern luxury travelers prioritize experiences that promote health, such as improved sleep, nutrition, and mindfulness. In Brazil, the Brazilian Luxury Travel Association (BLTA) highlights that high-end travelers now view wellness as an intrinsic part of the luxury experience rather than an optional add-on. Additionally, emerging trends show a growing demand for social connection and group-based travel as key components of emotional well-being, alongside specialized fitness and longevity programs.
