Wellness industry expands globally as longevity and IV therapies grow

The global wellness economy has reached approximately $6.8 trillion in 2024, according to the Global Wellness Institute, and is projected to approach $9.8 trillion by 2029. This sector encompasses personal care, nutrition, wellness tourism, and personalized medicine, utilizing terms like biohacking, cellular rejuvenation, and longevity to market services.

In Greece, the wellness economy reached $18.45 billion in 2024, representing 7.18% of the national GDP, with per capita spending at $1,776. The industry includes high-end services such as intravenous (IV) vitamin therapy, which is marketed for everything from hangover recovery to metabolic optimization. These services are often provided in luxury settings like hotels or yachts, with prices ranging from €260 to €390 per session.

Concerns have been raised regarding the regulation of these practices. Reports indicate that non-specialized practitioners or individuals without sufficient medical expertise may be performing medical procedures. Following the death of Giorgos Mazonakis, some websites promoting these services have disappeared or become inaccessible, highlighting potential gaps in oversight and the risks associated with unregulated wellness treatments.
