Wells Fargo to launch tokenized deposit platform for 24/7 payments

Wells Fargo has announced plans to launch a proprietary tokenized deposit platform in Fall 2026, specifically targeting corporate and commercial clients. The initial phase of the service will focus on providing 24/7 cross-border payments between US dollars and British pounds, utilizing blockchain technology to allow for continuous settlement outside of traditional banking hours.

In addition to its proprietary platform, the bank is co-developing a shared interbank network through The Clearing House, which is expected to launch in the first half of 2027. This dual-track approach aims to modernize payment infrastructure through programmable money and smart contracts, allowing for automated, conditional logic such as delivery-versus-payment triggers.

Unlike cryptocurrencies or stablecoins, these tokenized deposits represent claims on money held within the bank and maintain existing FDIC insurance and regulatory protections. The strategic move comes as financial institutions face pressure from the rise of private stablecoin consortia, such as the Open USD consortium, which seeks to capture market share in the digital asset space.
