Wels court addresses animal cruelty and vandalism case

An 18-year-old man appeared before the Regional Court in Wels, Austria, facing charges of animal cruelty and property damage. The case stems from an incident in the Wels-Land district where a group of youths stole a chicken, placed it in a plastic bag with a breathing hole, and transported it in a car. During the journey, the group filmed themselves tilting the animal out of a moving vehicle and forcing it to drink beer.

The defendant admitted to the actions, stating at the time he found the situation ‘very funny.’ In addition to the animal cruelty charges, the individual is accused of multiple acts of vandalism occurring between July and October. These incidents included throwing park benches, bicycles, and traffic signs into the Traun River, as well as damaging public trash cans.

Because the defendant was a minor at the time of the offenses, the case was resolved through a non-judicial measure under juvenile criminal law. He is required to compensate for the damages caused and complete 40 hours of community service, avoiding a formal criminal sentence.
