Welsh councils face opposition over school closure proposals
Local authorities in Wales are facing significant opposition regarding proposed school closures. In Powys, a formal consultation is underway regarding the potential closure of Gladestry CW Primary School. While the council cites falling pupil numbers and high operational costs as the primary drivers, local representatives have defended the institution. Councillor Ed Jones noted that the school has outstanding leadership and high standards, warning that closure could cause pupils to migrate to English schools, thereby draining funding across the county line and removing them from the Welsh curriculum.
In Pembrokeshire, senior councillors have backed a review into the closure of Manorbier School, which was severely damaged by a fire in October 2022. Following the decision to discontinue the school due to declining numbers and rebuilding costs, Councillor Phil Kidney proposed an impartial investigation into the process. The council has recommended two independent audits by its internal audit team to review the circumstances and improve future processes.
