Welsh councils turn Rhyl and Caernarfon sites into affordable homes

Denbighshire County Council plans to redevelop two high‑street properties in Rhyl – 64 High Street and 2‑4 Wellington Road – into modern, energy‑efficient affordable homes and refurbished ground‑floor retail units. The scheme, described by Councillor Rhys Thomas as part of a wider strategy to rejuvenate town centres, will begin construction later this year.

Gwynedd Council has purchased the former Crown Buildings in Caernarfon, known locally as "Alcatraz," with a view to converting the 1970s office block into 1‑ to 3‑bedroom affordable flats and a housing hub. The proposal includes 24/7 staffed security, a secure garden, play area and support services aimed at reducing reliance on emergency accommodation and providing stable housing for local residents.
