Star Wars: A New Hope receives first Welsh-language dub

Disney, Lucasfilm, Welsh broadcaster S4C and Creative Wales have announced that the 1977 film Star Wars – A New Hope will be released in Welsh for the first time. The dub, titled Star Wars: Gobaith Newydd, is scheduled to air on S4C and its digital platforms from Christmas Day 2026, ahead of the franchise’s 50th anniversary in 2027. A Welsh voice cast includes Matthew Rhys as Han Solo, Rhys Ifans as Obi‑Wan Kenobi, Aimee‑Ffion Edwards as Princess Leia, Mark Lewis Jones as Darth Vader, Osian Morgan as Luke Skywalker and other Welsh actors for supporting roles. Lucasfilm co‑president Lynwen Brennan, who grew up in Wales, said the project celebrates “a rich history of storytelling and a beautiful lyrical language” and hopes Welsh speakers will experience the same emotional impact as watching the film for the first time. The initiative is part of a broader effort to honour the film’s legacy while promoting the Welsh language.
