Welsh Education Minister prioritizes Welsh-language school development

During a session at the Senedd, Education Minister Anna Brychan addressed calls for increased Welsh-medium education, specifically the potential for a fourth Welsh-medium school in Cardiff. Members of the Senedd raised concerns regarding the current lack of accessibility, noting that students in areas like Butetown face long and difficult commutes to reach Welsh-language schools in North Cardiff.

Minister Brychan emphasized the government’s commitment to developing Welsh language schools throughout Wales and announced that consultations will begin this autumn on a broader strategy regarding the Welsh language and the implementation of the Welsh Language and Education Act.

Discussions also highlighted the cognitive benefits of bilingualism, with representatives suggesting the government look to models in Catalonia and the Basque Region to promote bilingual education effectively.
