Welsh farmers face dual crisis of wildfires and water shortages

Farmers in Wales are facing a dual crisis of intensifying wildfires and emerging water shortages driven by prolonged hot weather. In Blaenavon, wildfires have persisted for approximately three weeks, leading to calls for urgent financial aid and better firefighting support. Laura Anne Jones MS, Shadow Minister for agriculture, has criticized the lack of aerial firefighting assistance for farmland compared to the rapid deployment of helicopters to NRW-managed land.

Simultaneously, CLA Cymru has issued an urgent warning to the Welsh Government regarding a developing water emergency. While national water supplies remain at approximately 80% capacity, many farms lack mains access and rely on springs or tanks. Farmers report that supplies for livestock are dangerously low or have run dry, raising concerns about both human and animal welfare and the potential for illegal water gathering from streams and rivers.
