Welsh Government allocates £4.8m to combat food poverty
The Welsh Government has announced nearly £5 million in funding to assist local authorities in tackling food poverty and the cost of living crisis. The £4.8 million investment is designed to provide emergency food aid for individuals in immediate crisis and support initiatives aimed at preventing long-term poverty.
Local councils will be able to utilize the funds to strengthen community-based networks, including social supermarkets, community cafes, and lunch clubs. Additionally, grants may be provided directly to food banks experiencing increased demand. To address the root causes of hardship, the funding will also support cost-of-living advice for families to help build lasting resilience.
Capital funding is included to allow organizations to purchase essential equipment, such as fridges, freezers, and cooking tools, to improve the storage and distribution of food and surplus supplies. Recognizing the unique difficulties of service delivery in less populated areas, rural local authorities will receive an enhanced allocation to ensure support is equivalent to that available in urban centers.
