Welsh Government funds Welsh language training for midwives and health staff

The Welsh Government has provided funding to the National Centre for Learning Welsh to expand Welsh‑language training for health and social‑care workers. A new partnership with the Royal College of Midwives will create a dedicated Learn Welsh course for the more than 2,000 midwives working across Wales, along with learning resources such as phrase cards and a tutor in every health board. The initiative builds on existing programmes that have already trained over 9,000 health and care staff, aiming to improve person‑centred maternity care by enabling staff to communicate with women and families in Welsh.

Julie Richards, Director of the Royal College of Midwives in Wales, said the ability to use Welsh can make a real difference to patients’ experiences. Cabinet Minister for Education and Welsh Language Anna Brychan highlighted that the investment supports dignity, confidence and better understanding of health information for Welsh‑speaking patients.
