Welsh Government launches taskforce to regenerate town centres

The Welsh Government has established a new Town Centre Taskforce to address the decline of high streets caused by economic pressures and shifting consumer behaviors. The taskforce will be co-chaired by Tamsin Ramasut, a regeneration and community engagement practitioner, and Professor Simon Gibson CBE, an expert in Welsh innovation and business growth.

To support these efforts, £1 million in new funding has been announced for regeneration projects. Specifically, £654,000 is allocated for public realm improvements in Bangor, including new street furniture and an amphitheatre, while £350,000 is designated for the regeneration of the Rhiw Shopping Centre in Bridgend.

Siân Gwenllian, the Cabinet Minister for Local Government, Housing and Planning, noted that town centres remain vital community hubs but face challenges from online shopping and the relocation of businesses to out-of-town locations. The government aims to explore creative uses for empty spaces, such as arts centres, medical hubs, and adult-learning facilities, to increase footfall and support local businesses.
