Welsh Government restarts work on third Menai crossing

The Welsh Government has announced the recommencement of development work for a third Menai crossing to improve transport resilience for Ynys Môn and North Wales. Deputy Minister for Transport Mark Hooper confirmed in the Senedd that immediate actions will include design work, environmental assessments, business case development, and statutory approvals.

To support existing infrastructure, the government will invest in the maintenance of current crossings and implement resilience measures on Britannia Bridge, such as wind deflectors and variable speed limits. A proposed three-lane tidal-flow system for Britannia Bridge has been rejected due to safety and operational concerns.

Additionally, the government is addressing congestion on the M4 around Newport. An 18-month study will be conducted to evaluate road-based solutions, alongside efforts to reduce peak-hour traffic by approximately ten percent.
