Welsh Government seeks rail powers to protect regional transport

The Welsh Government is calling for accelerated negotiations with the UK Government to protect regional transport interests during upcoming rail reforms. Deputy Transport Minister Mark Hooper met with Lord Burns to discuss the implementation of the Burns Review, which aims to address M4 congestion around Newport and improve connectivity in South East Wales.

Hooper expressed concerns that the creation of Great British Railways could become “overly centralised,” potentially overlooking the priorities of the Wales and Borders network. He emphasized that the forthcoming UK Railways Bill presents a critical opportunity to secure greater control over rail infrastructure and investment for Wales.

The Burns Review recommends 58 measures to enhance public transport, including the construction of six new railway stations between Cardiff and Severn Tunnel Junction, 23 miles of rapid bus lanes, and 20 miles of new cycle routes to reduce dependency on private vehicles.
