Welsh Mountain Zoo announces death of eldest chimpanzee, Mabel
The Welsh Mountain Zoo has announced the death of its eldest chimpanzee, Mabel, who was over 60 years old. The zoo stated that Mabel passed away following a brief period of age-related decline.
Mabel was a significant contributor to the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) ex-situ breeding programme (EEP) for the critically endangered Western chimpanzee. Her biological legacy continues through her son and his offspring, some of whom are still part of the zoo’s chimpanzee troop.
The zoo’s animal team described Mabel as a “true matriarch” who was wise, resilient, and playful. Staff noted that she will be deeply missed by both the people and the chimpanzees who shared her life.
