Welsh Rugby Union board rejects calls for resignation

The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) board has rejected calls for its resignation following a week of internal revolt and public criticism. All 11 board members issued a statement defending their leadership against personal attacks and insisting there is no justification for the recent hostility toward staff and directors.

The board reaffirmed its decision to reduce the number of professional Welsh rugby clubs from four to three. They argued that Welsh rugby cannot realistically generate enough revenue to fund four competitive professional teams beyond 2028, noting that current finances and player pools are spread too thinly.

Opposition to the move has included calls from former rugby figures and officials for an interim board to stabilize the sport. Meanwhile, attempts to petition the Welsh Parliament (Senedd) for government intervention were rejected, with the Petitions Department stating the WRU’s decision is an “operational matter” outside the direct responsibility of the Welsh Government.
