Welsh Tourists Die After Hotel Balcony Rail Collapse in Lanzarote
Two men from Cwmbran, Wales—shopkeeper Darren Silcox, 56, and family friend Nicholas Thomas, 54—died after a wooden handrail on a balcony collapsed at the Galeon Playa Apartments in Costa Teguise, Lanzarote. The fall, estimated at 15‑22 feet, occurred in the early hours of a night out in October 2025, sending the victims into the atrium stairwell below. Silcox suffered fatal traumatic brain injuries, while Thomas survived the initial fall, was treated on the island, then flown back to the UK for further care and died ten months later.
Spain’s Civil Guard has opened an investigation into possible maintenance failures or safety lapses at the resort. A joint inquest in Wales, overseen by Coroner Rose Farmer, will examine the circumstances surrounding both deaths.
